Thank you for the meme-spiration to whoever decided to use the outdated and derogatory term ‘carpetbagger’ to slur Jake Seegers!
For anyone who doesn’t know — or who has never read or watched ‘Gone with the Wind’ — here is a Google AI description of carpetbagger:

Origin:
The term originated in the United States during the Reconstruction era (1865–1877), referencing the “carpetbags” (cheap luggage made of carpet fabric) that many Northerners carried when moving to the South to seek political power or financial fortune.
Now, considering it was only on April 22, 2026, in the CC Watchdog article, Shine a Light, Become a Target, that a form submission to Jake Seegers was published:
And then 10 days later on May 2, 2026, this gets published on CC Watchdog (thanks to Mitch Zenobi for supplying the images):
Now, I’m not saying the two events are connected.
I’m sure it’s a complete and total coincidence that someone would say they will do everything in their power to not get Jake elected, and then these anti-Seegers stickers just show up.
However, if the events are connected, it’s a bold statement on the blundering minds involved in such a brainless smear campaign.
Now, when it comes to the term ‘carpetbagger,’ I find it interesting since, if Jake Seegers is a carpetbagger, why would anyone have a problem with it since there are many carpetbaggers in local government?
I’m not saying all of these examples prove they are carpetbaggers, but since the term describes “politicians running for office in areas with which they have no genuine connection,” it’s only fitting to show where this slur becomes a double-standard.
For starters, one of the Watchdog’s most favorite people, Susan Fisch; she spent her entire career in another state and served as judge in that state until 2019, the same year Jake Seegers moved here (so he said in his interview):
Susan Fisch now participates in the local League of Women Voters, the Boys & Girls Club, she served on the Charter Review Commission after running for election, and she also oversees the Mock Trial program at Sequim High School.
What’s her genuine connection with this area? If Jake Seegers is a carpetbagger, then what is Susan Fisch?
And what is Wendy Rae Johnston, who moved to the area in 2020 and holds an elected position in the Clallam Conservation District?
Is she not a carpetbagger, too?
Also at the conservation district is Maggie Bockart, who recently moved to Forks:
Before moving to Forks, she worked in other places, like Maryland with the Chesapeake Bay Trust from 2023-2024:
But she isn’t from Maryland, or Washington State; she went to college in Nebraska according to her LinkedIn; and the pictures from her high school senior photoshoot, posted on a blog with the location of Omaha, Nebraska, can be seen here:
Whether or not she’s elected, she works with NGOs that rely on tax dollars. She has a hand in making decisions that impact the people of this region, whether they like the decisions or not. She has power and sway, and governing bodies, like the Clallam County Board of Commissioners, listen to the organizations she works in.
And she isn’t from here, the same as Jake Seegers. Does this make her a carpetbagger, too?
That’s not the end of it though. Now for the Port Angeles City Council carpetbaggers.

What would make this easier is to point out the only city council member who graduated from Port Angeles High School — LaTrisha Suggs.
While some city council members have lived here for many years, they still aren’t from Port Angeles or even Clallam County — and who is to say how long the dream of wielding power from the city council dais has been in their head?
First, there’s Navarra Carr, who earned a degree from a California college ‘prior to moving to Port Angeles’ without any year mentioned:
Then there’s Mayor Kate Dexter, who grew up in Seattle and moved to Port Angeles permanently in 2012:
Next is Jon Hamilton, who moved to Port Angeles in 2010:
Then there’s Drew Schwab who has lived in Port Angeles the longest, outside of LaTrisha Suggs, since 2003 after growing up in Ohio:
When it comes to Amy Miller, she is from Upstate New York:
Finally, the most mysterious city council member of all, Mark Hodgson:
Page 34 of the Voters’ Pamphlet doesn’t include any personal background information about him either.
He’s apparently so busy working up the ranks to get out of Port Angeles that he doesn’t have time to inform the people who elected him about who he is:
CC Watchdog raised residency questions in the past and shared this about the mystery man: On LinkedIn, Hodgson lists service on the City of Olympia Social Justice & Equity Commission beginning March 2023 to present:
Since his unknown origin makes it questionable if he is a carpetbagger, there is something else Mark Hodgson is — a career politician who is using Port Angeles as a stepping stone along his career path.
The point of this being, if Jake Seegers is going to be called a carpetbagger, then shouldn’t every other person in public office who isn’t from, or has genuine ties to, Port Angeles or Clallam County be called a carpetbagger as well?
Based on my interview with Jake Seegers, he did not move here with intentions to run for office or get involved in government — as I’m sure other people featured in this article didn’t move here with those intentions either.
However, if all the elected officials who aren’t from this region aren’t looked at as carpetbaggers, then calling Jake Seegers one only proves what I said before: it’s a bold statement on the blundering minds involved in such a brainless smear campaign.
